Cousins

A couple of weeks ago, Miss M. and I were in the car on the highway on the way to visit Granny. I was in the middle lane, and I spotted three motorcycles in the rear view mirror. They were about to pass us on the right, so I pointed them out to her. They zoom zoom zoomed past us and gathered in a pack in front of us. She asked "do they know one another?" I told her I thought they were probably friends. She said "no Mommy, they're cousins."

Because the cousin bond, it's extraordinary and it trumps friendship. Miss M. hasn't any siblings, but her cousins are dear to her - the nearest thing to siblings. She bickers and plays and squabbles with them, all the while loving them ferociously.

Edited to add: This was undoubtedly dredged up from the synapses by Aliki's post yesterday...and her post today reminded me that I should have given her credit.

cousins are even better than sibs when you're kids...they live somewhere else so you don't get sick of them.

cousins are great! My kids are lucky too to have lots and lots of cousins to play with.

My husband LOVES his cousins. They were like his siblings growing up.

Such a sweet bond.

Now everytime I see a motorcycle pack (and there are many here in the South) I will smile and think "Hmm. Cousins."

So cute!

My twin cousins were my first crush. It took me a moment to realize the bug crawling across the screen wasn't real. I hope I did see a bug, or I need to see a doctor.

Awwww.....
Monkey doesn't have cousins yet. But she has friends who are children of our close friends, so almost. Plus the added benefit that they can talk about marrying each other and it isn't (overly) weird. :)

We had all of the cousins here for a birthday party on Saturday. There were sixteen kids, including my three. Despite their large numbers, we hardly saw them, they play so nicely together.

Cousins rock.

Well, you know my thoughts on this! I STILL want cousins around and, alas, still don't really have them.

P.S. no need to give me credit! I love how the creative juices flow, bouncing off the ideas we read here, in this wonderful community of writers.

It is such an awesome precious bond, I wish people would not just dismiss the cousin relationship like it is meaningless!!! It's very special if your parents, or even grandparents, are siblings!!!!!
