Mother Goose in the Night Kitchen

Every time I read Mother Goose to Miss M., I think of In The Night Kitchen, and vice versa:

Mother Goose (Iona Opie & Rosemary Wells)

Blow, wind, blow! And go, mill, go!
That the miller may grind his corn;
That the baker may take it,
and into bread make it,
and bring us a loaf in the morn.
In the Night Kitchen (Maurice Sendak)
…Where the bakers who bake till the dawn,
so we can have cake in the morn…

So, which is it? Cake for breakfast, or bread?

I'd choose cake and Sendak any day.

Hey have you seen the great 70's animated version of In the Night Kitchen? It's out on a set of Scholastic DVDs and it's wonderful.

I always conflate Sendak and Mother Goose with this bit:

"I'm in the milk and the milk's in me. God bless the milk and God bless me."

and

"I see the moon and the moon sees me. God bless the moon and God bless me."

That Sendak, a master of intertextuality.

Sendak is a master of the nursery rhyme--have you seen We Are All in the Dumps With Jack and Guy? Amazing.

And you know me and breakfast: Luna bars all the way!

Oh I'm going with bread. Sorry to break the chain but there you have it. :)

My husband and I were JUST having the muffin is cake debate, not three minutes ago (he's the wrong one). But I think your question is at a higher level, isn't it? Genius, maybe.

Definitely cake. With frosting. And diet pepsi.

Oh no. I just read the first line and flashed to the Wiggles who have a song..."wind blow wind blow, blow wind blow."

Cake, break, Sendak...anything but the Wiggles.

I'm conflicted. My favorite for breakfast is my homemade pumpkin bread. Its called bread. But tastes like cake. It really heaven with a cup of coffee.

Love Sendak.

Depends what's on the bread. Barely toasted crusty bread with strawberry preserves is almost as awesome as cake.

But even with my bread, I still love Sendak.

Both are very bad for me, and account for some of this here poundage. That's it-- I need to switch to reading about baked goods rather than eating them.
