RIP, even though I hate the Yankees

Yeah, whatever. I hate the Yankees. For several reasons: hubris on the part of the Yankees, a deep and abiding love of the underdog Mets, and the DH. I mean, come on, what is that business of the designated hitter and the pitcher not going to bat? I hate all American League teams, just because the pitchers are wusses.

Anyway, we were sitting there at the breakfast table yesterday, reading the New York Times as we are wont to do, and discussing the fact that George Steinbrenner was dead. The girlie looked up from her cereal at this photo, spread out in front of her, and said, "is that him in his box?"

Meaning, is that a picture of him dead in his coffin? Coffee came out my nose, despite the fact that it was a completely logical question what with the brown background and the hand placed just so.

Oddly, I think he is most famous the the Seinfeld episodes.

I grew up on the Yankees, my husband on the Mets and our kids are growing up on the Red Sox. We're a mixed family.

I love M! I do think Steinbrenner would be the type of guy to specify that he be buried wearing his sunglasses and with his hand posed to show off his ring.

She certainly has an eye for the absurd--it is so easy to imagine now that she has pointed that out.

I only know who he is because of Seinfeld.

And yes, valid and funny question!

It's hard to imagine the Yankees without Steinbrenner, but I guess we'll have to.

I'm a National League gal myself - totally with you on the DH issue.

LeBron James killed him, and Harvey Pekar, too.

I wrote a post and never finished it on how I despised him for what he did to baseball and what he DIDN'T do for the Bronx, my native borough.

And I may be Bronx raised but my family are Mets fans--my dad's lived in the Bronx for 89 years and never rooted for the team!

It DOES look kind of like a funeral home photo, doesn't it?

Transcribed from The Hubby:
I do not get the big deal of the passing of Mr Steinbrenner. I remember him to be a bully and scumbag. Ask Dave Winfield and Billy Martin and even Yogi Berra.

Crazy thing is his bullying tactics work in baseball because there is no salary cap. His best work is current team where he stepped out of the limelight and delegated baseball decisions to baseball people. I guess there is something good about overpaying people.

Bravo to Maggie for trashing the DH. American League baseball is a joke.

Cute comment by the kid. I wonder if there were any toys shaped like bones in her cereal box. Thanks for sharing.
